2012 Highlights, 2013 The Year of Me, Some HIIT, & My Jam of 2013

I had a lot of life changes in 2012. Some of them sucked but as cheesy as it sounds, I am grateful for all of my shitty life experiences.
If I have ever made you laugh, you should be too because my bad choices have created a plethora of comedic material.

Why 2012 Was A-THE-EFF-MAZ-ING

(In no particular order)
  • I moved from Minnesota to Pennsylvania pretty much by myself.
  • I started lifting weights and have pretty much become a badass.
  • I worked the Egg Whites International booth at the 2012 Arnold Sports Expo.
  • I finally graduated from the University of Minnesota.
  • I adopted a cat who taught me how to be a little more responsible, a little less self-centered, and love unconditionally. (Future boyfriends, you're welcome.) She passed away in April but I really do think that we improved each other's lives.
  • I started this blog which has been one of the most cathartic experiences of my life.
  • My family and I watched all of the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Harry Potter movies.
  • I came to terms with the fact that my shitty decisions created the majority of my (...and my family's) stress and am moving on.
Why 2013 is the Year of Me
1. This time last year, I was resolving the shit out of my life. My goals had goals! Guess how many of my goals I achieved... None! Not a single one because they were not realistic. 2012 was definitely not a failure because I didn't attain my unattainable goals.  I had an amazing year and probably would have regardless of what was on my vision board.

2. Looking back, the goals I made last year weren't even things I wanted to do. They were things other people expected me to do. So, in 2013 I plan on doing nothing other people want me to do and everything I want to do. Yep, I am being selfish as hell in 2013 because I have missed too many opportunities being worried about what other people were going to think and I am over it.

3. This year, I would like to do the Spartan Trifecta, a GO RUCK Challenge, compete in figure in the NPC Atlantic States, take MMA lessons, and start an MSW/MPH program.  But, if those things don't happen, it's not a big deal. There might be other opportunities that trump those.
My only goal is to become a smarter, stronger, and healthier me.

This Week's Workout

Before I moved, I was posting weekly grocery lists that contained healthy foods on sale at grocery stores in the surrounding Twin Cities area.  It was a great way for me to regularly post to this blog.  Since moving, I have had a difficult time figuring out food prices because, frankly, everything is so flipping expensive! This week my mom spent $41 on 1 bag of fruits, veggies, and simple household items from our local grocery store. That is insane! Next time you go grocery shopping, I want you to think about how long you have to work in order to pay for your food, get angry, and then do the workout I posted that week because exercise is a great stress reliever!

Instead of posting weekly grocery lists, I am going to post workouts you can do with little or no equipment in 30 minutes or less.

4 Rounds
1 Minute of Jumping Rope
1 Minute of Dumbbell Thrusters
1 Minute of Mountain Climbers
1 Minute Rest

Legs!

Today I was cleared by my doctor to start lifting legs and doing cardio again! He thinks I strained a tendon in my knee while I was running sprints.  Since there was no fluid in my knee, he said I was good to go! He recommended starting with a low weight, high repetition leg routine.  I am going to add some steady state cardio to my workout plan too.

Legs
Seated Leg Extensions 2x20

Barbell Hack Squats 2x20

Leg press 2x20

Leg Curls 2x20

Squats 2x20

Deadlifts 2x20

30 Walking Lunges

This is the first total body HIIT routine I have done in a while and it was ROUGH! I am going to try to add a total body workout to my routine each week.
Complete the entire routine without any rest.

This Week's Workouts

About a month ago, I tweaked my knee running HIIT sprints.  I have only lifted legs once since then because I do not want to re-injure it.  I have a doctor's appointment on 10/23 and am eagerly waiting to figure out what is wrong with it.  I have not been doing cardio either.  Below are the workouts I have done this week.  As with all the workouts I post, exercises grouped together are done as a super set.

Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It

Confession: I listen to ignorant, ghetto rap when I lift.
I have tried to listen to smart, political rap like Public Enemy when I lift but I just don't get as hyped up with PE as I do with 2 Chainz.
Here are some of the songs on my newest lifting playlist.

"Black Magic" Meek Mill feat. Rock Ross
"Mercy" Kanye West feat. Big Sean, Pusha T, & 2 Chainz
"Murda Bizness" Iggy Azalea feat. T.I.
"I'm Back" T.I.
"F*ck Em" Rick Ross feat 2 Chainz & Wale
"Out of My Mind" B.o.B. feat. Nicki Minaj
"Hoodrich Anthem" DJ Scream
"Sicker Than Yo Average" Fabolous

4, 3, 2, 1!

One of my favorite things about living in Lancaster, PA is having access to Franklin and Marshall's track.  I love running sprints! When I lived in Minnesota, I usually ran on a ratchet, asphalt track  which was not very fun or comfortable to run on.  Wednesday, I did my favorite track workout called the "4, 3, 2, 1"!

Warm Up
1/4 mile jog and Dynamic Stretches
Workout
(Jog or walk back to the starting line)
4 100m sprints
3 200m sprints

Sweat It Out!

I am 17 days out from my first competition of 2012, the Mr./Ms. Natural Minnesota, IFPA Pro North American, and the goal is to sweat, sweat, sweat!  I have updated my workouts with the help of Sienna Bahlmann of Sienna B.Fit and Danny J Johnson of the Sweaty Betties.  The workouts are performed as a circuit without any rest between exercises or sets.  Because of my schedule, I do my cardio in the morning and lift after my day job Monday-Thursday.  I work doubles on Fridays so I lift in the morning and do my cardio during my lunch break.

It's About Time!

I am absolutely loving About Time Whey Protein Isolate!  About Time is the cleanest form of protein powder on the market.  1 scoop contains ~25 grams of protein, 0 grams of carbs, and 0 grams of fat which is great for me because I cycle my carb intake.  It is available in 11 flavors including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, peanut butter, banana, birthday cake, mint mocha, cinnamon swirl, peaches & cream, and chocolate peanut butter.  There is also unflavored option.  I have tried the chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, peanut butter, banana, birthday cake, mint mocha, and chocolate peanut butter flavors.  My favorites are chocolate peanut butter and mint mocha.  About Time sweetens their products with stevia so there are no artificial sweeteners.  My first purchase from About Time was the Multi-Flavor pack of 6 Fill, Shake, and Go bottles.  The Fill, Shake, and Go bottles are very convenient.  I serve tables on the weekends and bringing the bottles to work was a great way to get a meal in on limited time.  About Time products can be purchased online, any GNC store, and at retailers nationwide.  If you are apprehensive about switching your whey, you can get 2 trial packs for $3.99.

Contest Prep Diet & Supplements

This season I have been cycling my fat & carb intake. I have 2 diets that I rotate throughout the week. My coach, Felicia Romero, has been making tweaks to my diet weekly. I follow Diet 1 for 1 day and Diet 2 for 2 days and then repeat the cycle. I have been drinking close to 2 gallons of water per day in addition to green tea & coffee. I sweeten my tea, coffee, and oatmeal with Truvia & cinnamon. I season my food with garlic, hot sauce, Mrs. Dash, lemons, or Kirkland's No Salt Seasoning which is found at Costco. Below are my diets and the supplements I am taking.

Diet 1
